Lightning Dust is a re-birth of sorts. This self-titled debut started as a side project of Amber Webber and Joshua Wells, the founding members of Black Mountain. Listeners familiar with the heft of Black Mountain will immediately recognize what occurs here as a yin to those other efforts.
When I listen to this record, I’m made to feel as if I’m in a room, alone with Ms. Webber. Her voice permeates everything. Any music that might be accompanying her comes from somewhere else. That is not to say it’s an afterthought. There are expertly crafted layers of melody and counterpoint, but as the water serves the wave, the instrumentation makes way for her voice to crash upon you.
