In August of 2008, the music blog IndieMuse posted a kind of catch all for what was spinning in their universe. An update of items that apparently didn’t quite justify an entry of their own. Buried among links to remixes, some news, and an endorsement for an apartment listing website, was an introduction to the efforts of Abandoned Hospital Ship, presumably named after the Flaming Lips’ song of the same name. Two of the tracks, “Aperture” and “Immortality Institute” were available to download. A response from a reader asked for more and was rewarded with a link to the entire album, as well as a promise of music to come.

As far as I can tell, that never came to pass. Efforts to learn anything else yield sparse results, and so what we know of this band, comes from the nine songs that seemingly didn’t merit any more attention than a plug for HotPads.com. I’d like to right that wrong. The history of music is littered with bands that took the advice, “leave them wanting more,” to heart. And so it is here. The unfulfilled promise, and the optimism that there’d be a follow up, seems to have had an effect on what is here. Instead of any urgency to get it all out, the songs on Aperture reveal a patience and a dedication to the moment at hand.

Edit: By the power of email, I’ve connected with some of the musicians that made this record. A five song ep followed before the band evolved into other projects, continuing to make music together until 2016.
