The explosion of rear view mirror psychedelia in the late 90’s, re-cast as any number of definition lacking genres, rendered most bands with a trip intent to pander to an audience hungry for something reminiscent of the 60’s. All bellbottom and no mushroom, as it were. The formula was simple enough to follow, so much so that there were any number of bands claiming they were the new mantle upon which to burn the inherited incense. Hooverphonic wasn’t concerned with such things.
The music of A New Stereophonic Sound Spectacular is flavored with mind expanding themes and destination rich musical experience, but never at the cost of sincerity. Jammy, trippy, spacey, it’ll lull you into a meditative trance or propel you into distant galaxies. To listen to this record, is to be folded in with the music, experiencing it almost first hand instead of in the third person.
